The Coordinator of Career Services is a full-time twelve-month position reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs. The position is responsible for the overall operation of the Career Services department including individual career counseling; assisting students in exploration, career identification and development of their future career plans; developing and updating the department website; developing relationships with local employers and fostering job and internship development; coordination of seminars, student workshops and programs. The Coordinator holds administrative responsibilities related to Career Services including creative leadership along with excellent management skills. In addition, the Coordinator is responsible for communication with faculty, employers, and alumni as it relates to Career Services. This position will involve some evening/weekend work hours. Duties also include:

  • Administering and interpreting career assessments such as Focus-2, TypeFocus, and Kudor to incoming and current students to assist them with early career/major identification.
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive list of local business and industry that aligns with current TJC programs and can be used for advisory committee maintenance, recruiting, and job placement for career services as well as gap analysis for future program evaluation.
  • Gathering/maintaining data on services provided and students served.
  • Providing professional guidance in a confidential setting to currently enrolled students and alumni; includes assessments, information on careers, occupations and employers; identification and clarification of personal values and goals; and decision-making skills.
  • Assisting with Summer Orientation and Preview Days by making presentations to parents and students about Career Services.
  • Providing support to potentially incoming students by providing increased opportunities for resources such as, career assessment and program selection to local high school counselors and teachers
  • Working closely with the Office of Dual Credit to identify relevant career pathways for particular CTE dual credit offerings at high schools while assisting the high schools with career exploration and college advancement.
  • Possessing and maintaining knowledge of and experience with all aspects of choosing a career/major in a college career services office.
  • Seeking and participating in professional development opportunities on campus and off as funding allows; improving and maintaining knowledge of the career services field and best practices and career assessments to assure proper interpretation of results to the students.
  • Maintaining membership in state and national organizations; participate in conferences and workshops as required and funding available.
  • Work with Department Chairs of AAS/Workforce programs to create a standard workforce readiness curriculum that is shared across programs to be developed and delivered with the support of Career Services and will meet the career readiness program outcomes.
  • Serve as a facilitator with local business and industry for AAS/Workforce programs in the identification of potential external learning experiences in the form of internships and future employment for students.
  • Continue to foster and grow the partnership with the East Texas Workforce Commission for regional job fairs and employer opportunities through worker transition programs.
  • Creating/coordinating seminars for the benefit of students and/or alumni, to include resume writing/critiquing, interview skills, and job searches; presentations by career professionals; learning opportunities to prepare for job searches, and simulated interview opportunities.
  • Maintaining a career library in the career services office and on the website.
  • Providing leadership, acquisition, and management of the current career search tools; including technology, on-line recruitment systems, credential files, databases, and other resources.
  • Arranging on-campus student interviews for local business and industry.
  • Facilitating group career counseling seminars with students in AAS/Workforce programs.
  • Establishing office policies and procedures in consultation with the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, as well as setting/assessing annual departmental goals and outcomes in TracDat.
  • Building a network of employer contacts through professional associations, job fairs, and personal communications.
  • Aligning Career Services with workforce program advisory committees in order to strengthen the colleges services to local business and industries to maximize resources and have a greater reach into the local business and industry community.
  • Building and/or maintaining a close working relationship with the academic departments and advisors in AAS/Workforce departments to understand the connection between program offerings and career choices.
  • Developing new programs and services, as appropriate; to meet the needs of students and alumni when academic programs change.
  • Planning, scheduling and supervising the implementation of career days and job fairs as well as additional special programs as appropriate.
  • Developing budget needs or requests and plan allocations in consultation with Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, assuming initial responsibility for all expense authorizations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in business, marketing, education or related field; Master’s in higher education, student personnel, counseling or other related area preferred.
  • Three years’ experience in career services or other student services support role, community college experience preferred.
  • A working knowledge of career services assessment software helpful.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students, employers, and community.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must be comfortable to work and make decisions independently and be self-motivated.
