The employee serves as a Histopathology Technician in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center Charleston, SC. which requires specialized knowledge, training and skills. The employee is responsible for processing, preparing, cutting and staining tissues from surgical procedures, bone marrows, frozen sections, and cytological specimens. Advising physicians about optimum fixation/immunofixation techniques to be employed for a given type of specimen and disease process. Ensuring specimen integrity, adequacy of documentation and identification process in order of clinical urgency and ensure specimens are turned around within required timeframes. Preparing a wide variety of tissue specimens from all parts of the human body. Performing microtomy for frozen sections with use of cryostat sectioning which requires many complex and delicate processes. You will perform other duties as assigned.

Specialized Experience :
Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-06) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: maintain, troubleshoot and operate automated laboratory equipment used in histology/immunochemistry; process, prepare, cut and stain tissues from surgical procedures, bone marrows and other exams; ensure specimen integrity, adequacy of documentation while preparing a wide variety of tissue specimens from the human body.

Preferred Experience - One year of experience in grossing preferred.

Applicants may substitute graduate education for the experience required for the GS-07 level. Graduate education must be directly related to the position.

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-07 level.
