Primary Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the college’s intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities.

The successful candidate is expected to: demonstrate the ability to sustain an active research program; provide evidence of successful teaching; and show the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Prior classroom teaching experience at the college level in the context of a diverse student community is preferred.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an avid interest in utilizing a project-focused, interactive approach to engaged learning. Experience in curricular development is sought since our growing undergraduate and graduate programs are looking to enhance and diversify offerings. Interest in and experience in teaching online is an asset.

The preferred candidate’s teaching and research interests will be principally focused in one or more of the following areas: sports journalism, sports broadcasting, sports and new media, sports and society/culture, sports history, sports advertising, and sports public relations. Preference will be given to candidates who can have developed courses and can ably teach in more than one of the aforementioned areas.

Superior candidates will be those who can also complement other areas of department focus in political communication, civic engagement, professional communication, global communication, public relations, non-profits, international relations, service-oriented teaching, and community-based learning. The successful candidate will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses that fit the research and teaching interests of the candidate.

As a member of the department, the candidate will advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, which can include advising student organizations aligned with political communication. Supporting the theory-practice mission of the Department of Communication Studies, the candidate will have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning such as the Washington, D.C. Program and civic engagement projects. (The Washington, D.C. Program, offering students a fall semester in the nation’s capital, focuses on the issues, processes, and decisions surrounding government, social advocacy groups, nonprofit organizations, business, economics and trade firms, law and criminal justice agencies, environmental organizations, arts and humanities institutions, education, media and communication organizations. )

The Department of Communication Studies offers undergraduate and graduate programs. At the undergraduate level, degree programs are for students who wish to pursue communication-driven careers in the corporate, political, sports, or non-profit arenas. All three programs share a core curriculum that includes courses in communication research methods, argument and advocacy, and conflict and negotiation. The Master of Arts in Communication Management provides students with the knowledge, theory, and skills necessary to design and execute strategic, integrated communication plans for public and private organizations with expertise in web-based communication.

Communication Studies, founded in 1884 as the first department in Emerson College, engages students to appreciate application of theory and practice in leadership roles in all walks of life. From your first day at Emerson, Communication Studies students are immersed in local, national and global projects through coursework, teamwork, internships, and co-curricular activities such as Emerson College Polling Society, Forensics, and the Communication, Politics, and Law Association. Communication students work with their counterparts in Barcelona, Mexico, Chile, as well as locally in Boston, with the Bird Street Civic Engagement Project and Emerson Literacy Education & Empowerment Project (eLEEP).
