Prepare for implementation of an ordinance to restrict sales of menthol tobacco products, which will include developing protocols and a guide for enforcing the ordinance; coordinating technical assistance activities to assist stores in developing alternative business models in response to the ordinance; and conducting listening sessions with Minneapolis youth to determine the impact of the ordinance on youth access to tobacco products.
Monitor local, state and federal tobacco regulations and legislation; prepare reports regarding impact on the City.
Promote cessation opportunities with City of Minneapolis employees; integrate, as appropriate, cessation activities into the Healthy Living team's place-based strategies in northeast Minneapolis, the Cedar Riverside community and southeast Minneapolis neighborhoods.
Public Health Specialist II – Healthy Living Community Liaison
Specifically, this position will:
Collaborate with residents, community organizations and clinics to identify and implement strategies to increase access to healthy foods, physical activity opportunities and programs/resources to help people prevent and manage diabetes. This work will include conducting community engagement activities, conducting community assessments and convening community-based teams to develop and implement action plans, and managing contracts with community organizations that will implement components of these action plans. Initially, the position will focus these activities in northeast Minneapolis and the Bossen Field area of southeast Minneapolis.
Support the Minneapolis Diabetes Prevention Network and expansion of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) by implementing activities to increase the availability of the DPP in community and clinic-based settings and assisting the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce in efforts to expand prediabetes activities in Minneapolis worksites.
Participate on the Healthy Living Team:
Attend bi-weekly team meetings.
Assist in grant development and submission process, as needed.
Provide support to other projects as needed.
Participate in the Healthy Living Initiative's communication activities and events: assist with planning, set-up, promotions and as-needed activities.
Assist with evaluation and reporting activities required by grant funders.
Other Responsibilities :
Participate in Public Health Emergency Preparedness, training and response as needed and assigned by the department.
Attend department-wide quarterly meetings and trainings.
Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Community Health, Health Promotion, Urban Studies, Sociology, Community Organizing, Community Development or closely related field.
Minimum Experience: Two years of relevant experience.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position may be considered.
