This position is located in the Medical Administrative Service, VA North Texas Healthcare System in Fort Worth,Texas.

The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant plans, directs and controls the full range of administrative functions and clerical support functions in patient treatment areas. Provides administrative and clerical assistance; guidance and support to the professional staff and manages the day-to-day activities on the inpatient and outpatient treatment units ensuring policies and procedures are followed as they relate to an inpatient occurrence of care. Interviews and selects new employees subject to the approval of the Chief, Medical Administration Service. Tracks the progress of new employees, evaluates the performance of all assigned Medical Support Assistants, counsels when necessary and submits justifications for incentive awards or personnel actions. The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant performs duties independently within the frameworks of established policies and regulatory directives. Additionally, the Supervisory Medical Support Assistant takes part in strategic planning meetings to assure departmental projected budgets are met.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week.Monday through Friday from7:30am to 4:00pm and 8:00am to 4:30pm with occasional Saturdays.

Basic Requirements:

Grade Determinations: To qualify at the GS-8 grade level as aSupervisory Medical Support Assistant you must meet the following requirements in addition to the basic requirements:

Specialized Experience:
Note: Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to Medical Support Assistant experience at the next lower grade level. For example: applicants monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues and maintains efficient workflow. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: assuring coverage of all areas of responsibility; conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work; ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; providing guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures; distributing and balancing workload; creating and maintaining employee work schedules; orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current employees; ensuring all training requirements are met; organizing the work structure of his/her assigned areas; and acting as liaison between MSA and staff in order to resolve day to day conflicts. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of a variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time?

1. Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.

2. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.

3. Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training.

4. Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary but is performed in a combination of medical areas that would require periods of sitting, walking, standing and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. There are minimal amounts of stretching, bending, pushing and pulling. In general, the work?,does not require special physical demands.
