Dr. Zhiyi Zuo, M.D., Ph.D. (151 PubMed citations from 2002-2017) and Dr. Robert Thiele, MD (59 PubMed citations from 2008-2017), a NIH K-08 awardee run an active lab focussed on organ protection and preconditioning in stroke and sepsis in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia. They are currently seeking a Post-Doc Research Associate to focus on organ protection and developing greater understanding of sub cellular energetics.

The fellow will work alongside Dr. Thiele, under the guidance of Dr. Zuo, to better understand how cells and organs respond to hypoxic and inflammatory insults. Traditional laboratory techniques (e.g. analysis of HIF-1, iNOS by Western blot, ADP: ATP ratios) will be combined with novel technology (near infrared spectroscopy) to determine whether or not the metabolic shutdown that accompanies stress is maladaptive or pro-survival, better understand the balance of O2 availability and ROS/RNS production (and subsequent oxidative stress), assess the impact of preconditioning and HIF-1 down regulation on tolerance for inflammatory stress.

The applicant must have a PhD or MD by the start date and have extensive experience in standard biochemical procedures (Western blot, ELISA, ADP: ATP ratio, mRNA isolation for qPCR) as well as working with cell culture and rodents.

In addition to Drs. Zuo and Thiele, the laboratory employs a full-time Ph.D. researcher in biomedical engineering to assist with technical (near infrared spectroscopy) and computational work. The Zuo laboratory has had consistent academic output for the last fifteen years and continuous NIH funding since 2003.
