We started to build an audio team a year ago to tackle that question. And now we have our answer: It sounds like The Daily . Since launching in February, The Daily has become an essential part of the day for millions of listeners.

The Daily is powered by the journalists and journalism of the Times newsroom and brought to life in audio by the lean and highly collaborative team of superstar audio producers and editors that make the show each day. Beyond “The Daily,” we have several other shows driven by the same authority, access and mission that has made the Times — and now, The Daily — indispensable to so many.

The members of the NYT Audio team came to the Times from radio and podcast backgrounds, drawn by a shared mission to explain this moment, a deep respect for quality reporting, a penchant for the narrative form and an entrepreneurial desire to redefine the genre.

The Job:

The New York Times audio team is seeking an Associate Producer to work across the shows in our portfolio, including “The Daily.” This person will support the hosts and senior production staff in the making of existing and developing projects.

You’re going to be working alongside a team of highly ambitious makers, and we’re going to need you to bring your best ideas to the table. You’ll help us book interviews and do research. You’ll coordinate studio bookings and track down archival audio. You’re going to spend a lot of time with tape -- logging in Pro Tools and also selecting the best moments from interviews and cutting in voice tracks. Your work will be part administrative, part editorial, and you will be an essential member of the team that defines what The New York Times sounds like.


  • Log tape in Pro Tools and transcribe interviews
  • Book interviews and help hosts and producers with research and interview prep
  • Assist with recordings in studio and in the field
  • Coordinate studio bookings and tape synchers
  • Cut voice tracks and select tape from interviews
  • Track down archival audio
  • Participate in story meetings and group edits


  • Proficiency in audio editing (Pro Tools)
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated record of creative problem-solving
  • Belief that collaboration makes work better
  • At least one year of experience with editorial decision-making


The audio team operates like a start-up within the larger news organization. That means each player should be able and excited to wear multiple hats and be willing to pivot based on audience response or broader strategic goals. Members of the team are creators as well as audio evangelists expected to spread enthusiasm and new skills throughout the newsroom.
