This position is located within the Recreation Therapy and Voluntary Services under the Office of Associate Director for Operations at the VAMC in Hampton, Va. The Program Support Assistant is responsible for all functional aspects within the Patient Assistance Program and the Patient Clothing Room Program which includes: inventorying; receiving and safeguarding of clothing, personal possessions and valuables of patients; and the eligibility and authorization for personal services for indigent patients.

The incumbent also coordinates all aspects of the patient transportation within the Medical Center and all related clerical duties necessary for the operation of these programs. The incumbent provides oversight and direction to all patient workers/volunteers assigned to the Patient Assistance Program within the Recreation Therapy and Voluntary Service.

Major Duties Include:
Receives and processes applicants for the Patient Assistance Program.
Makes or assists in making the determination as to the patient's eligibility for clothing issuance and personal services.
Copies and files documentation, and/or enters information into the computer system.
Responds to technical questions regarding patient's rights and responsibilities with regards to eligibility for services.
Administers and coordinates all aspects of patient transport within the medical center and all clerical duties necessary for the operation of Escort Unit.
Provides orientation, continuous training and evaluation of assigned Escort workers.
Safeguards all equipment assigned to the Escort Unit by maintaining a sign-out/ sign-in book.

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, or libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilates. Uses required personal protective equipment or performing a work procedure in conflict to Medical Center policies.
