The Division of Wildlife is a direct descendant of the Ohio Fish Commission, which was created by the General Assembly in 1873 to deal with declining fish populations in Ohio's inland lakes and streams. In 1949 the Division was joined with other state conservation agencies under the mantle of the newly created Department of Natural Resources.

Division of Wildlife projects are carried out by a team of nearly 500 trained personnel. We face many challenges in the pursuit of our goal to ensure an abundance of high quality wildlife experiences for today's Ohioans and for future generations. Land acquisition, harvest regulations, and licensing are fundamental tools in the management of Ohio's wildlife resources.

Our division manages or cooperates in managing over three-quarters of a million acres of diverse wildlife lands throughout the state, plus more than 2 1/4 million acres of water. On the basis of biological data and public input, we issue regulations that supplement long-term statutes to protect wildlife and to provide the public with opportunities to benefit from wildlife for recreational, scientific, and other purposes.

In the Division of Wildlife, serves as Division Law Enforcement Administrator by directing, coordinating & administering overall statewide Law Enforcement Group activities & programs for the Division of Wildlife; prepares policies, procedures & programs; monitors & evaluates program & project accomplishments; monitors all activities of Lake Erie Enforcement Unit; Wildlife Officer Academy, Firearms Qualification, Permits, Covert Unit, Officer Training Programs, O.R.C. (Ohio Revised Code) changes & Rule promulgation processes, internal investigations, records management & inventory (e.g., supervises administrators of stated program); develops & modifies annual & long-range wildlife law enforcement programs for the state including goals, objectives, budgets, policies, procedures, forms & publications for the chief's approval; evaluates work progress toward achievement of program objectives & reports to Chief on timely basis; provides technical advice to Chief & Assistant Chiefs; provides guidance, assistance & consultation to other Wildlife administration & district managers (e.g., law enforcement issues); responds to emergency &/or security issues (e.g., personnel, critical incidents on/at Division lands/facilities, weather disasters, fish kills, media issues) on a 24/7 basis.

Reviews, writes &/or recommends administrative rules prepares & directs preparation of Division of Wildlife Orders in accordance with established procedure (e.g., gives public notice & makes proper filings & arranges hearings); assists with legislative matters (e.g., prepares proposed legislation & evaluates state & federal legislative bills); develops & administers budget & operational plans of all the Law Enforcement Section's statewide law enforcement projects to meet division's mission, goals & objectives; administers contracts & agreements; prepares correspondence on division's programs & initiatives.

Coordinates division activities & acts as liaison with public constituency groups, other divisions, departments, Attorney General's office, agencies & private organizations on all Wildlife Law Enforcement matters; answers inquiries concerning division programs; represents Chief or Assistant Chiefs at public meetings; delivers speeches, makes presentations & appears with the news media regarding the Division of Wildlife's conservation initiatives; attends staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications -Completion of graduate major core program & 30 mos. exp. in natural resources specialty indicated under job duties within approved position description; valid driver's license.

-Or undergraduate major core program & 42 mos. exp. in natural resources specialty indicated under job duties within approved position description; valid driver's license.

-Or 66 mos. trg. or 66 mos. exp. in natural resources specialty indicated under job duties within approved position description; valid driver's license.

-Or 6 mos. exp. as Natural Resources Administrator 3, 22913, in assigned area; valid driver's license.

-Or equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.

NOTE: If assigned to work as Law Enforcement Officer, must also hold Ohio Peace Officers Training Council certificate. For positions assigned to perform law enforcement duties, applicants must successfully pass background check by appointing authority which includes polygraph, psychological & medical examination. Applicant must demonstrate physical fitness as outlined in department directive. Final applicant accepted for position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicant with positive test result will not be offered employment per Section 123:1-76-09 Ohio Administrative Code.

Unusual Working Conditions: Requires travel; may be on call 24 hrs. per day, 7 days per week.
