This position is located at the LSC-System Office at 5000 Research Forest Drive. The Woodlands, Texas 77381.

Position Summary:
The incumbent will utilize his/her legal skills to accomplish legal assignments within the Office of General Counsel. Under the direction of the General Counsel, this position within the Office of General Counsel provides and assists in the delivery of legal counsel to LSCS stakeholders. The incumbent performs standard legal work and participates in the performance of complex legal work to include such areas as research, policy review, legal compliance issues, contract reviews, employment affairs, legal advice, and other legal services pertaining to an institution of higher education.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drafts initial reports, recommendations, legal opinions, research memorandum, and other work product for higher-level legal review
Drafts initial responses to requests for information, production, and evidence
Drafts initial correspondence to external and internal stakeholders
Reviews and monitors state and federal legislation affecting the System to provide independent updates to stakeholders within LSCS
Creates and provides training materials on legal and policy issues for LSCS
Drafts and reviews contracts, negotiates contract language, and approves System contracts under the supervision of supervising attorneys
Provides low-level, day-to-day legal advice to stakeholders within the LSCS
Performs legal research and investigations as directed by the General Counsel or his designate.
Provides routine updates regarding pending legal matters to the General Counsel or his designate
Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of research methods in Westlaw, LexisNexis, or both
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to synthesize and brief complex legal issues for non-lawyer consideration
Ability to develop best practice procedures for internal stakeholders
Ability to interpret and apply applicable laws, rules, and regulations
Ability to prepare a variety of reports and legal opinions
Ability to supervise support staff personnel and direct them accordingly
Ability to maintain professional composure and decorum when dealing with disagreeable, difficult, or unprofessional individuals
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
Ability to be confident in performing independent legal work
Ability to be humble and self-aware regarding tasks outside of candidate’s expertise
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook

Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
