Student Health 101 is the go-to online wellness outreach program for hundreds of colleges, universities, and high schools around the US and Canada.
The goal? Give our student readers actionable, evidence-based, and exciting wellness content that can help them make real change in real time. Our online content hub features columns, full-length articles, video segments, app reviews, and more that rotate on a monthly basis. We cover topics from nutrition (“5 recipes to make in a mug”) to academics (“This 15-min study strategy gets you big results”) to sexual assault prevention (“How your brunch convos with friends can help build a better community”).

About our two central platforms
We overhaul our homepage content monthly (10 times a year, September through June) plus a compilation Orientation issue. We support the health promotion and wellness initiatives of 350+ post-secondary schools across the US and Canada. High school edition
We publish Student Health 101 High School on the same schedule: 10 times a year, September through June. This edition supports the health promotion and wellness of high school students. There are two audiences to consider here too—high school students and their teachers and school administrators.
Working alongside a talented and creative editorial team, the Editor co-leads the creation, coordination, and delivery of wellness-related education content each month. But…it can’t just be educational; it also has to be fun. We want someone who can combine killer research skills with a playful and nuanced voice, tone, and approach. The final product should be fact-based and accurate without being judgmental, sensational, or boring. Our ideal candidate is ready to take on this exciting opportunity to support the well-being of millions of students and to boost their career in writing, editing, health communication, and/or health education.
- Editing and providing constructive feedback on draft content from our freelance contributors. Freelancer didn’t quite get it? Then you’ll need to execute your own feedback to get the piece where you know it needs to go, in a time crunch.
- Fact-checking research to ensure freelancers have interpreted it accurately. Spoiler: They don’t always interpret it correctly, but we have to. So sometimes this is on you.
- Proofreading and finalizing articles for publishing.
- Incorporating professional and student advisory board feedback on our content; this includes determining what feedback sticks and what doesn’t make the cut.
- Adapting content for our various audiences and editions because, surprise, there are five editions in total.
- Conceptualizing and strategizing content for our editorial calendar—this is where those dual audiences come in.
- Choosing appropriate quotes and data from our database of student surveys.
- Liaising with our expert contributors and professional advisory board members
- Developing student surveys to gather information and quotes that will inform upcoming content strategically
- Keeping up-to-date on health and wellness topics relevant to our student audiences and best practices in student health promotion
- Choosing and suggesting edits to videos from our contributors.
- Coming up with creative approaches for new content, strategizing how to make health topics interesting to students, and striving for a youthful, relatable voice that doesn’t make students roll their eyes.*

This is an all-hands-on-deck, collaborative team environment that includes an Executive Editor, Assistant Editor, Designers, and Production Managers all working toward interdependent deadlines. We depend on and support each other, and we usually have a lot of fun in the process. (Looking at you, themed office brunches.)
At a minimum, you should have
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communication, Public Health or other health-related fields
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong command of vocabulary, spelling, and grammar
- A sense of humor and ability to translate that into written works
- Working knowledge of public health, health education, or health communication best practices
- Academic research skills; e.g., identifying relevant studies from the academic literature
- An interest in pursuing a career in writing, editing, content development, or health education
- Strong organizational and project-management skills
- A creative approach to content strategy and problem-solving skills and a willingness to use it experientially, even if it means getting it wrong sometimes
- Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to manage an evolving workload and tight deadlines
- Interpersonal skills to maintain positive team relationships
- Strong problem solving, decision making, time management, and critical thinking skills
- Proficiency in common software applications (Microsoft Office)
Preferred candidates will have
- A master’s degree in Health Communication, Health Education, Public Health, or a related field
- Familiarity with social media strategies and email marketing
Salary and benefits
Our office is located in Westborough, MA, five minutes west of the I-495/Rt. 9 interchange. We would prefer candidates who can work in office, but are open to remote or partial remote options for the right person. Salaries commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid vacation leave, a 401k plan, disability insurance, dental insurance, and the option to participate in the company health care coverage.
