The Content Strategist is a key member of the Digital Communications unit within the Office of University Communications and the University's Central Web Team comprised of staff within University Communications and iTech. This position is responsible for developing a comprehensive content strategy for the University's primary public-facing web presence across all campuses/sites and working closely with decentralized web staff to support strategic institutional priorities. The position also develops and delivers a robust training curriculum for decentralized web staff, to include managing a web style guide that clearly articulates University standards for web content. Initially this position will be responsible for implementing comprehensive content strategy and training recommendations produced by an external consultant.

This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated proofreading ability and public speaking skills; strong leadership ability and attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; the ability to work independently and as a member of a team; the aptitude to develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders; strong organizational, prioritization, and task management skills; and the ability to work effectively under deadlines.

This position is based on the Gulf Park campus, but day travel to the Hattiesburg campus and other locations is expected as needed to fulfill job responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Adheres to University and department policies, procedures, and regulations.

Serves as the lead content strategist for the University's primary public-facing web presence across all campuses/sites. Develops sound information architecture and high-level content plans for marketing-critical areas of the web, with particular focus on developing strategies and editorial calendars to ensure content remains fresh, dynamic, and visually engaging for key audiences. Ensures that all high-level content aligns with the University's branding and marketing goals and institutional priorities.

Develops a robust training curriculum and associated resources for decentralized web staff, in partnership with other staff in Digital Communications and iTech. Leads the creation, implementation, and enforcement of a web style guide that clearly articulates University standards. Maintains content aspects of the web style guide. Establishes content development and content management system (CMS) training schedules and delivers training on a regular basis.

Works closely with decentralized web staff to ensure that unit-level content development supports strategic institutional priorities. Serves as the primary point of contact for content development resources and guidance on web content standards, best practices, information architecture, and visual identity.

Actively participates in brainstorming sessions, presentations, and team meetings within Digital Communications. Serves as a member of the Central Web Team comprised of staff from University Communications and iTech. Develops and implements strategies for content migration during comprehensive or incremental web upgrades as assigned.

Maintains current knowledge of content, information architecture, training, and support best practices. Serves as the expert on search engine optimization (SEO) best practices, working closely with the Content Analyst to determine the best SEO strategies for the University's public-facing web presence. Articulates SEO strategies to decentralized web staff and shares related training resources to assist units in monitoring SEO effectiveness.

Writes original copy for high-level web pages, special topic pages, features, profiles, and select Digital Communications projects as assigned, with best practices and organic search results in mind. Develops, reviews, repurposes, copyedits, approves, and publishes content as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five years experience in digital communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.

Strong background in digital content strategy and feature writing for the web. Knowledge of best practices for web content management, information architecture, and search engine optimization. Experience using website management tools for editing and publishing web content. Demonstrated ability to build consensus, manage tasks according to prescribed deadlines, and achieve successful project outcomes.

Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in related field.

Experience developing and delivering training and related resource materials. Knowledge of enterprise CMS software and tools, Adobe Photoshop, and other design and office productivity tools.
