This is a part-time position in the Technology & Support Services department of the Santa Ana Public Library. The incumbent(s) may work up to 20 hours per week. Work schedule is to be determined. There are currently four (4) vacancies but this number is subject to change.
Bilingual pay is an additional $1.01/hr, if applicable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Registers new borrowers; issues library cards and updates borrowers' records; explains library policies and procedures; checks library materials in and out using an automated circulation control system. Accurately sorts and files materials alphabetically, numerically and by other predetermined categories. Identifies and handles lost or damaged materials. Collects and records fines and fees; uses cash register to receive payments. Answers routine public inquiries in person and via telephone and directs the public to appropriate locations and/or library personnel. Responds to complaints and requests for information; resolves patron concerns and refers more difficult problems to responsible personnel. Assists in interpreting and applying library rules, policies and procedures. Performs opening/closing circulation tasks including balancing receipts and verifying drawer cash, turning on/off all computers, and sets-up circulation counter. Sorts and routes incoming mail and prepare material for mailing. Searches, receives and issues books. Shelf-reads the library collection to ensure materials are in the correct location and order. May act as lead clerk or lead and oversee the work of library Page and volunteers. Performs other functions as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in general library clerical work or any equivalent combination of education and one year of clerical experience including public contact, preferably in a library setting, which provides the desirable knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.
Knowledge of: General library operating principles; standard library practices and procedures including circulation and collecting fines and fees; applications of automated of library circulation system, practices, and techniques of effectively dealing with the public. Basic arithmetic principles and cash handling; modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment; English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation; alphabetic and numeric systems for classifying and organizing library materials.

Ability to: Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policies and procedures related to assigned duties; understand and follow oral and written instructions; make simple computations and listings with speed and accuracy; learn assigned clerical tasks readily; operate modern office equipment and specialized library services software applications programs; ability to type accurately using Window based programs; organize own work, sets priorities, and meet critical time deadlines; use English effectively to communicate in person, over the phone, and in writing; make sound, independent decisions within established policy and procedural guidelines; establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Special Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use of standard office equipment, including a computer. Incumbents in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and close to retrieve and shelve material. Incumbent must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires frequent standing and walking between work areas.
Must be willing to work flexible schedules including afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Possession and retention of a California Class C driver's license is desirable. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish or Vietnamese is also desirable.
