The Office of Degree Programs and Student Affairs includes more than 50 staff members and is responsible for a range of services and activities inside and outside the classroom for students enrolled in the masters and PhD programs at HKS. The Office’s work falls into three broad categories: One is the strategic planning and operation of HKS’s enrollment services, which include student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, and the registrar’s office. The second is the design, implementation and oversight of a robust career advancement program. The third is support for students’ personal, academic, and professional development, which includes creating and carrying out programs and services to enhance students’ overall experience, providing individual counseling and advising, collaborating with students to promote diversity and enhance belonging, overseeing student conferences and events, and establishing standards for student life (including disciplinary procedures and Title IX and ADA compliance).
Therefore, the Senior Associate Dean for Degree Programs and Student Affairs (also known as “the Dean of Students”) has significant strategic and operational responsibilities—planning and building systems and programs to serve students, managing data-based assessments of the effectiveness of those activities, implementing those systems and programs on a daily basis, and designing and carrying out policies that relate to student life. Equally important, the Senior Associate Dean for Degree Programs and Student Affairs engages with students enthusiastically—both during and beyond regular work hours—by listening to their individual and collective concerns and responding to their needs in collaboration with other stakeholders at the School.
The Senior Associate Dean for Degree Programs and Student Affairs reports directly to the Dean of HKS and collaborates closely with HKS’s Academic Dean; HKS’s Associate Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging; other senior HKS administrators; the faculty chairs of HKS’s degree programs; and other offices at the University (including health services and the police when situations require).
Candidates for this position must have at least a master’s degree and five years of senior-level professional experience, including demonstrated success in managing student systems, engaging with students, and collaborating with a range of stakeholders.
