Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle controls to operate the equipment and attachments. During fire suppression assignments, the operator is exposed to smoky conditions, fire burns, and other similar conditions. As a line firefighter, this position is subject to the Bureau's step test and arduous physical requirements for firefighters.
Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The operator is exposed continously to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning or to the possibility of being overrun by the wildfire. The operator is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust.

Responsibilities The incumbent functions as an Engineering Equipment Operator. The primary duty of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment on fire lines for the purpose of suppressing wildfires, and to maintain and repair heavy equipment used in firefighting operations. The Engineering Equipment Operator will also operate the equipment in reclaiming burned areas when not assigned to fire suppression operations.
Travel Required 25% or less - When operating heavy equipment on fire lines may be required to live in backcounty camps.

This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements. The maximum entry-age for this position is 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you have left Federal service and are over the age of 37, you must provide copies of SF50s showing beginning and ending dates of covered Federal law enforcement service or your will not be eligible for consideration under this vacancy announcement. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement or your will not be eligible to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.
D.O.T. DRUG TESTING REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION. This position requires possession of a Commercials Driver's License (CDL) and is a Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. If the person selected for the position does not currently occupy a CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing Designated Position, they must submit to and receive a negative test result prior to appointment. A positive drug or alcohol test result may be grounds for denying final placement into this position. The Act also mandates that the incumbent is subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.
Qualifications OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining applicant's qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, the applicant must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials that they possess the skill level that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision.
