The Library is looking for Library Aide 2 staff who are interested in serving their community while gaining valuable skills.
The Salem Public Library (SPL) has served as a learning organization for interns interested in customer service careers at the Library. At SPL, interns have the chance to work with world-class customer service experts in their respective fields. The Library provides unique learning opportunities for students and these relationships have provided many interns with career-building experience for future employers.
The Intern Staff assist in processing hundreds of returned materials daily (think Amazon fulfillment center), issue library cards, process customer payments, manage and balance a cash drawer, and assist customers with checking out library materials.
Are you eligible? You must be:
- A high school graduate or GED recipient
- Enrolled full time at an accredited college or university, technical school
- Able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening
- At least one year of experience providing face to face customer service and desire to provide excellent customer service to community users.
- Cash handling and point of sale cash drawer reconciliation experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Computer skills and experience with MS Office products, especially Excel, and at least 60 WPM keyboarding skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule of at least 15 hours a week, including Saturday and/or Sunday.
- Good time management skills and the ability to adapt to change and changing work priorities
- Previous experience or knowledge of libraries
- Spanish language skills are not required, but are a plus.
