The City of Seattle is going through some exciting changes, and we have the opportunity to bring in an energetic and positive Workers' Compensation Analyst to be part of the in-house team with the Seattle Department of Human Resources (SDHR).

In this role, you will be part of a team of nine and will act as a consultant to SDHR and other City departments. You would be aligned with one or more departments, with the aim of building strong working relationships with your customers, acting as the point of contact for employees, and dedicating yourself to an all-star level of customer service. You will be the adjudicator and claims manager for a caseload with those departments, with a wide variety of claims.

This position offers a unique set of challenges and rewards. The Workers' Compensation unit is restructuring many roles and responsibilities, in addition to standardizing policies, practices, and procedures. We are aligning to a highly consultative model that supports the health and well-being of essential City workers, such as Firefighters, Police Officers, and Lineworkers

Job Responsibilities:

Analyze and process complex or technically difficult workers' compensation claims by investigating and gathering information to determine compensability within the scope of Title 51. Manages claims through well-developed action plans and diary management to an appropriate and timely resolution.
Calculate and assign timely and appropriate reserves to claims; manages reserve adequacy throughout the life of the claim.
Calculate and pay benefits due; approves and makes timely claim payments and adjustments in accordance with Title 51.
Prepare necessary state fillings within statutory limits.
Oversee the resolution of litigated files.
Coordinate vendor referrals for additional investigation and/or litigation management.
Use appropriate cost containment techniques including strategic vendor partnerships, such as nurse case managers and vocational rehabilitation counselors, to reduce overall cost of claims for the City.
Manage claim recoveries, including but not limited to: subrogation, Second Injury Fund excess recoveries and Social Security and Medicare offsets.
Ensure claim files are properly documented and claims coding is correct.

In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the following required qualifications (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the job):

Education : A four year degree in business or public administration, legal, medical or other related field, and

Experience: At least one year of Washington State workers' compensation claims management experience.

Work Environment/Physical Demands : Work is performed in an office environment. Work may require contact with abusive and/or emotionally distraught injured workers.

A certification, including one or more of the following: AIC, WWCP, Approved Claims Administrator
