Position Purpose:

The Medical Assistant supports the patient care mission by carrying out medical and administrative tasks in accordance with their scope of practice. The MA escorts patients to exam rooms, interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records information on patients' charts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In accordance with clinic procedures, greets patients ready to be roomed and escorts patients to exam rooms.
  • May collect the following components of initial data: patient name, arrival time, who accompanied by; vital signs; height and weight; and chief complaint.
  • Prepares patient and assists with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Readies chart by updating medication list with prescribed and over-the-counter medications and obtaining appropriate medical records information.
  • Participates in quality improvement team efforts, including meetings to discuss selected patients on each day’s schedule with follow-up tasks.
  • As part of the care team and as assigned, updates the chart with patient information relative to preventative health (i.e. vaccines) and documents patients’ self-selected goals for health.
  • Completes point of care testing (POCT) as ordered by the provider and documents the outcome in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Performs assigned quality control (QC) duties as directed in the lab manual. Coordinates patient care diagnostic testing, which has been ordered by physicians. This may include communications with the OSU Medical Center.
  • Maintains patient areas and working spaces in a clean, neat and orderly manner and performs cleaning duties as assigned and as needed. Monitors use of supplies/medications; restocks as necessary and informs appropriate persons of needs for additional supplies.
  • Recognizes patient rights and provides confidentiality of patient information and for dignity through own performance and in relationships with others.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be a member of a team in which the number one priority is the patient.
  • As assigned, checks out patients at end of the visit. This may include:
  • Ensuring all vaccinations, labs and tests have been ordered and performed or scheduled.
  • Scheduling referrals and follow up appointments.
  • Providing patients with resources related to their medical conditions.
  • Providing patients with scripts and provider-completed individualized Plan of Care.
  • Conducts pre-visit reminder phone calls for patients scheduled for upcoming appointments.
  • Assists the provider with real-time documentation of each patient’s medical chart during his or her appointment.
  • Must successfully demonstrate patient care skills at Ambulatory Services Orientation (ASO) and if required, through OSU Internal Medicine LLC’s established remediation process, within first 120 days of employment, as well as on an annual basis and when otherwise required as part of an improvement plan, corrective action or performance evaluation.
  • Travel may be required to accommodate staffing levels at other Internal Medicine clinical facilities

  • Requirements:
    • Medical Assisting Diploma
    • High School diploma or equivalent required.
    • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent combination of training and relevant experience in a medical environment required.
    • Proficient computer, keyboard and typing skills required
    • CPR certification
    • EMR (Electronic Medical Record) experience
