Barber National Institute was founded in 1952 by Dr. Gertrude A. Barber in Erie, PA. The original mission of the Institute was to provide a more integrated approach to individualized care for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities. In 1995 Barber National Institute expanded its mission and began programing designed to meet the behavioral health needs of individuals throughout our communities.

Our ten behavioral health programs, now collectively known as the Barber Behavioral Health Institute, serve children and adults in Erie County and offer satellite programs in Warren and Allegheny Counties. Our children and adolescent programs, delivering services in the home, community, facility and school settings, include: Behavioral Health Rehabilitative Services (BHRS); Family Based Mental Health Services; Acute Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Services; School-Based Partial Hospitalization Services; Blended Case Management; and Outpatient medication management, individual, group and family therapy. Outpatient services, Adult Partial Hospitalization Behavior Supports and Blended Case Management are offered for adults with behavioral health needs.

PSYCHIATRIST

The psychiatrist provides medical treatment and clinical leadership to ensure evidence-based and outcomes driven treatment of adults and children with mental illness and/or behavioral health concerns

Responsibilities of Psychiatrist

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations.
  • Oversee treatment planning for clinic patients.
  • Prescribe medications, instruct clients about the side effects and monitor response to prescribed medications.
  • Review and sign treatment plans and treatment plan reviews.
  • Provide clinical supervision for therapists.
  • Complete diagnostic assessments.
  • Complete risk assessments and manage identified risks.
  • Work with on-site nurse, medical assistant, nurse practitioner, physician assistant providing healthcare and health monitoring to assure integration of primary care.
  • Work in collaboration with client and significant others to support recovery goals.
  • Maintain timely supporting documentation in the patients’ EHRs.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Psychiatrist must have a current license to practice medicine in Pennsylvania and be certified or eligible to be certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Experience working with people with mental illness, serious and persistent mental illness, autism and intellectual disabilities with co-occurring mental illness, is required. The psychiatrist must have the ability to bill through Medicare and Medicaid and cannot be excluded from any Federal or Federally assisted program.
