This is a 7am- 7pm RN position on the Child and Adolescence Program. Registered Nurse. The Staff Nurse I performs routine nursing work at the competent level in a state mental health hospital. Works under moderate supervision from Charge Nurses or Nurse Managers (Nurse II/III) with limited use of initiative and independent judgment. Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients nursing care needs using specialized skills in (depending on the setting) psychiatric or medical-surgical nursing. Identifies nursing diagnoses or problem lists and formulates and initial plan of care based on assessment data. Serves as a team leader and provides clinical supervision to other nursing staff members including Licensed Vocational Nurses, and Mental Health Workers as necessary. Establishes unit routines and develops and maintains the therapeutic milieu. Makes observations of patient behavior and status and reports to the physician, other team members and supervisor as appropriate. Carries out nursing interventions as identified in the multidisciplinary treatment plan. Administers medications as ordered and maintains medication administration and controlled drug records according to facility policy. Serves as group leader for therapeutic patient groups or patient teaching activities as necessary or as requested. Trains other staff members as necessary or as requested. Must understand that duties, location of work, and shift/pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Must understand that duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Performs comprehensive assessment of patients' nursing care needs including physical, behavioral, psychiatric, and social needs (25%). Observes and analyzes patient behavior and status and documents in the medical record or reports as needed to other team members, including the attending physician (20%). Develops or contributes to the development of the individualized treatment plan in collaboration with other treatment team members and based on data obtained from the assessment. (10%). Provides comprehensive individual or group health teaching and coping strategies to patients and/or families in order to meet patient/family needs (10%). Utilizes one-to-one counseling skills in therapeutic interactions with patients to assist them in identifying anxiety and developing coping strategies (10%). Initiates and implements population-specific nursing interventions based on appropriate standards of care for the assigned patient population (5%). Administers medications and treatments as ordered by the physician and maintains medication administration (MAR) and controlled drug records according to facility policy (5%). Establishes and monitor the therapeutic milieu through clinical supervision of RN I, LVNs, and Mental Health Workers (5%). Provides training to subordinate staff in psychiatric nursing principles, unit routines, and milieu management (5%) Monitors Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior (PMAB) 1 - 6, and in the absence of other staff members implements PMAB 1 - 3.2 (2.5%) Initiates and monitors the appropriate use of restraint or seclusion to ensure the safety of the patient and staff members (2.5%).

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Licensed to practice professional nursing in the state of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact

Initial Selection Criteria:
1) Preferred- One (1) year of work experience as an RN in a recognized health agency, hospital, or health care facility, OR two (2) years of work experience as an LVN in a recognized health agency, hospital, or health care facility, OR a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program. OR as Referenced in the Department of Nursing’s Appointment and Promotion Standards for RN’s 2. Prefer one to three (1-3) years of recent experience in an inpatient facility such as acute setting, state hospital, state school, community program, psychiatric home health, private psychiatric hospital. Preferred 3. Experience with the Child & Adolescent population - preferred 4. Experience working on CAP Preferred. 5. Experience as direct care staff supervisor preferred 6. Stable work history preferred 7. Valid License preferred 8. Strong Computer Skills preferred
