The Assistant Director is the core liaison among the entities that help students prepare for, carry out, and process their year abroad. This position reports to the Director of the Interdisciplinary Global Programs (IGP). This position is the main contact for several on and off campus entities, which requires thoughtful relationship building and nurturing to proactively address the complexities of a program that crosses academic departments, international borders, and public-private professional sectors.

Job Description
  • Assist the Director in developing and maintaining high quality international academic partners for the IGP study semester, examining course offerings and academic support services to connect students to the resources that will help them succeed while abroad.
  • Assist the Director in developing strategic and sustainable internship sites for high quality and targeted professional experiences for students.
  • Serve as a member of the unit’s management team by participating in strategic planning, staffing decisions, and other key areas.
  • Supervise entry level staff and student workers.
  • Conduct research on program data, student evaluations, and mentor evaluations to complete both formative and summative assessments of student learning in long-term immersion programs.
  • Oversee junior year programming, including preparation meetings, pre departure workshop, and final language/culture checkpoints to ensure students are on track for their year abroad and make recommendations if they need further preparation.
  • Oversee the student-mentor matching process, introducing students to partners and leading the process of negotiating and documenting the match.
  • Oversee the management of information regarding potential risks to students while abroad, including a protocol of communication with students in countries experiencing disasters and follow up on students’ risk assessment forms for their internships.
  • Provide guidance and consistency in IGP policy and procedure decisions and communication to students.
  • Maintain the IGP internship strategy, working with each student preparing to go abroad on which internship placement strategy is the best fit for the student.
  • Serve as the liaison between IGP and international mentors for student internships, communicating internship requirements prior to internship, sending a midpoint evaluation and post internship thank you packet and final evaluation.
  • Serve as the liaison between international mentors and NAU faculty mentors and academic advisors to ensure the students are receiving meaningful feedback on their international experience.
  • Manage the model to support CAL mentors for their work with IGP students.
  • Lead in the organization of the IGP Language and Culture Summit, the culminating event to highlight IGP student projects around the world, across languages and concurrent presentation sessions.
  • Travel to partner institutions to maintain existing and build new academic and internship partners.
  • Organize the IGP programs’ collaborative entities to disseminate results of high-impact international and interdisciplinary programming.

  • Master's degree in related field and three years of relevant experience.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

Salary

$59,000 - $63,000

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment.
