This position serves as a Primary Care Physician Assistant for Ambulatory and Primary Service at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System (SLVHCS).

Specific duties include:
Management of the primary care needs of a panel of assigned patients.
Functioning within a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT), working collaboratively with the other PACT members, including the RN Care Coordinator, the LPN, and the Medical Service Assistant. Works with extended PACT members, including pharmacists, mental health professionals, social workers, and dietitians.
Providing effective care to patients using sound judgement in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating patient care for assigned patients.
Performing history and physical examinations, ordering appropriate lab and other tests, evaluating test results, establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing treatment plans, and modifying treatment plans when appropriate.
Managing prescriptions for assigned patients, including controlled substances if warranted.
Working effectively and making appropriate requests for assistance from the collaborating physician as appropriate.
Assisting, as requested, with clinic procedures.
Answering patient questions regarding consult placement, follow-up and how to get patients seen. Interacting with consultants as needed for successful referrals.
Referencing quality improvement information and organizes patient care needs to assure safe, efficient and cost effective care.
Serving as clinic level patient advocate.
Acting as the focal point of the designated outpatient clinic by being the contact person for all other consultant-specialty services regarding patient care. The PA will ensure that the care is coordinated and communicated to the outpatient.
Initiated effective actions in emergencies.
Additional duties as required.

TOUR OF DUTY: Hammond - Monday-Friday -7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
Baton Rouge - Monday-Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
with Occasional Evenings and Saturdays.

This is a Bargaining Unit Position
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements :
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
Must have a current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA). Note: Current VA Physician Assistants employed prior to March 12, 1993 who are not NCCPA certified areexempt from this requirement.

Preferred Experience:
Qualifications include current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration from a state that authorizes Physician Assistants to prescribe controlled substances and personal DEA registration is highly desirable.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organization (e.g., professional, philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements : A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.
