The successful candidate in this position will oversee the Department’s Industrial Hygiene (IH) Program. This position will maintain/develop the Department’s Industrial Hygiene programs, including but not limited to, the Air Contaminants, Chemical Hygiene, Hearing Conservation, Lead Exposure, Respiratory Protection and Silica Exposure Control Programs to meet federal and state regulations and standards. The chosen individual must exhibit knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and techniques, including the use of approved exposure assessment strategies to characterize and monitor worker’s exposure to hazards, as well as, to investigate and evaluate the adequacy of various IH Programs and other factors affecting employee’s health in the workplace.
This position will perform baseline and periodic hygiene surveys of work areas – with particular emphasis on indoor air quality assessments related to mold, chemicals, radon, etc. – and provide summary reports detailing interpretation of the assessment results and appropriate recommendations to correct and eliminate any identified exposures. The successful candidate will maintain the industrial hygiene equipment to manufacturer’s specifications and factory service schedules including: calibrating equipment and maintaining calibration logs, developing specifications for IH Program equipment and personal protective equipment used by agency personnel. This position will prepare and manage the IH Program budget and, as warranted, procure and manage consultant services to implement projects in support of the IH program.
Other duties of this position include reviewing contractor’s health and safety plans for bridge coating removal projects, conducting respirator fit tests, participating in the new products review process, and reviewing of Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used within the Department. In addition to the core IH duties, this position will provide support for the Environmental Division’s Compliance Program implementation associated with Department Facilities and Construction Projects.
This position requires a working knowledge of IH concepts, principles, techniques, and practices that are needed to plan and carry out an industrial hygiene program. Additionally, knowledge of OSHA standards, national consensus standards and safety programs is required. The selected candidate will be able to effectively communicate orally, in writing, and while making presentations. This person will also have the ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers and work independently to resolve IR issues that arise. Proficiency with using computers and software applications and a valid driver’s license is required.
The preferred candidate will have a college degree in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Health or a related field. Designation as a Certified Industrial Hygienist through the American Board of Industrial Hygienists is also preferred. This candidate will have experience working with industrial hygiene, hazard control, and occupational health and knowledge of environmental compliance programs.
This position requires a DMV record check and a fingerprint based criminal history background check.
