Under general supervision, Airport Communications Dispatchers, during an assigned shift, receive incoming telephone calls for service, both emergency (including 911, medical, fire, police, and airfield) and non-emergency (including paging and information requests). The essential functions of the class include: obtaining necessary information from callers; processing calls appropriately, including providing to the public, issuing pages, notifying appropriate Airport personnel, and dispatching proper personnel; maintaining two-way radio communication with police, fire, medical, airfield, and maintenance units; monitoring alarm systems; operating a variety of communications equipment; operating computer terminal and/or PC based (Computer Aided Dispatch, radios and telephones) to process requests for information regarding stolen vehicles and property, missing and wanted persons, and transmitting appropriate information to field units; and performing related duties as required.
Dispatchers work under unpredictable periods of stress caused by the volume of messages and/or emergency conditions in the field involving the protection of life and property. Persons employed in this class must work shift assignments, which includes around-the-clock, weekend and holiday work schedules. Employees are subject to changes in shift assignments. Due to the emergency nature of this work, overtime is required.

1. Possession of a High School Diploma or proof of successful completion of an equivalency test (G.E.D. or California High School Proficiency Examination); AND
2. One (1) year of work experience as a public safety (police/fire/medical) dispatcher in a multi-frequency computerized dispatch/communications center; AND
3. Ability to type and operate a computer data terminal at 35 net words per minute (net). This ability will be assessed during the probationary period and appointees may be required to show proof or demonstrate his/her ability to type at the required rate.

Candidates must pass the CritiCall Performance Examination in order to continue on in the selection process.
Oral Examination: (Weight: 100%)
Candidates who pass the CritiCall Performance Examination will be invited to participate in the Oral Examination designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to: general knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of police communications work; the operation of radio receiving, transmitting and other communications equipment; federal regulations governing the operation of radio receiving and transmitting equipment; working knowledge of geography of the Airport; ability to memorize names and locations; maintain radio log and simple records and reports; speak clearly and concisely and spell correctly; follow instructions; reason clearly an think and act quickly in emergencies; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; operate computer terminal and other communications equipment.
