The UCSF Pancreas Center is a dynamic and growing multidisciplinary center focused on the research and clinical treatment of pancreas patients. Center members are involved in conducting translational research across multiple areas of expertise. Center investigators conduct collaborative research projects with other cancer centers and private companies in biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

Under the general direction of the center director, the Associate Director will provide high-level administrative and fiscal management for the center. Responsibilities will include: independently identifying, developing and overseeing research processes; initiating strategic alliances; assessing, overseeing regulatory needs; supervision of center staff and interfacing with center investigators, collaborators, and local as well as federal agencies.

The Associate Director identifies funding opportunities, provides grant support through writing, editing and facilitating correspondence, as well as budget and resource management. The individual will function with a high degree of autonomy and has direct oversight of research projects, including grant and contract preparation, regulatory affairs, and personnel and data management.

General support includes development and donor outreach, organization and design of leadership and scientific meetings and participation in center meetings and retreats. Works with the director to formulate short and long term center goals. Proactively and independently problem solves across multiple areas including but not limited to center issues involving, biobanking, clinical support, administrative processes, and fiscal as well as HR management.

The Associate Director provides recommendations to center director regarding policies and procedures that will improve center operations. Engages directly with leaders across the School and is a liaison between the director and the management team of direct reports, aligning execution to goals, removing roadblocks, and gathering research to facilitate faster decision-making, and ensuring communication and reporting are happening smoothly and consistently. Provides oversight and guidance to high priority initiatives.

The Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology is one of the largest clinical, research and training divisions of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. The Division is responsible for research and clinical programs in nine disease subspecialties. The Division maintains a very complex relationship with the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and UCSF Medical Center for both research and patient care. The Division has 50 full-time faculty, 35 clinical fellows and trainees, and nearly 100 research support and administrative staff. The Division currently expends $50 million+ per year in pursuit of its clinical, research, training, and service missions.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in science, business or related field
• Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices
• Experience directing and administering an independent program with administrative and programmatic responsibilities
• Experience preparing grant proposals (budgets and narratives) to a variety of government and non-profit funding agencies
• Advanced oral and written communication skills
• Ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills: Demonstrated ability to effectively persuade and negotiate results and to handle conflict and facilitate/ mediate difficult situations with a wide range of faculty and staff. Ability to network and build strong effective professional relationships both internal and external. Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers

Preferred Qualifications
• PhD. Advanced degree in management: MPH or MA in Public Administration and / or equivalent experience / training
• Five years of progressive experience with multi-million dollar budgets and asset management in a health care or research setting or subsequent experience
• Academic background and experience in research, ideally related to field of cancer care and treatment
• Experience providing research support to multiple investigators, overseeing regulatory and safety compliance for therapeutic and non-therapeutic studies and clinical research operations including multi- center ISTs
• Proven ability to organize complex projects in an efficient and effective manner
• Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others
• Ability to independently identify, develop and oversee processes
• Independent and critical thinking paired with skills in team work and use of sound judgment in determining priorities
• Proven track record of assessing and managing risk, anticipating conflicts, identifying and implementing solutions and managing ongoing processes to ensure compliance with policies and regulations
