The Data Engineer will work closely with Data Architects (to determine appropriate data management systems), Business Intelligence Analysts (to determine data and metrics/measures needed for reporting and analytics), and Business Analysts (to ensure comprehensiveness and accuracy of Business/Functional Requirements Documents) to act as the bridge between DBA functions and the data consumer, providing oversight and guidance to data infrastructure and data management efforts. The Data Engineer will play an influential role in the building and maintenance of data “pipelines”, optimizing data for consumption by the organization through reporting and analytics developed by BI Analysts and other analytics roles across the company.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain a clear understanding of business data needs, through constant communication with business data owners, BI Analysts, and other related individuals, to provide insight and recommendations to IT staff (Business Analysts and Data Architects) to develop and implement appropriate data structures
  • Assist Data Stewards and Data Architects to form thorough and accurate data management systems
  • Develop data set processes for data examination and modeling, and support establishment and maintenance of data management systems
  • Support research, design, testing, and implementation of the data warehouse and related computational environments to sustain reporting and analytics development
  • Monitor reporting and analytics performance and advise the Data Warehouse team of necessary infrastructure changes to continuously improve the information environment
  • Work with business owners to develop key domain questions and to guide the design, build, testing, and implementation of datasets, such as data marts, to support reporting and analytics solutions
  • Identify and solve data management issues through technical efforts
  • Collaborate with the Lead Data Steward to identify and understand emerging data needs, and support incorporation of new data elements through technical development efforts
  • Provide insight to Business Intelligence team and recommendations to Data Warehousing team to maintain consistency of data models and data infrastructure
  • Provide query optimization guidance for the BI team and broader analytics staff
  • Support development of organization-wide data definitions and data dictionary through understanding of business data needs and technical data systems requirements

  • Requirements
    Education: BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, MIS, or other related field, or equivalent of 5 years working experience as a Data Engineer; advanced degree is a plus

    Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience as a data systems engineering support personnel or data systems engineering administrator; healthcare experience is preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of MDM, BI, and data warehouse design and implementation techniques. Experience with SQL databases, such as SQL Server. Familiarity with cloud computing platforms, such as Azure. Expertise with SQL, and significant experience with data management, data wrangling, and query tools. Familiarity with Data Warehouse design and infrastructure environments. Proven process design skills to participate in business requirements analysis. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to be able to explain the work in plain language. Understanding of healthcare business terminology and healthcare data elements.
