The Assistant Research Technician provides support for both Imaging and Patient Derived Xenograft (PDX) services provided by Comparative Medicine at FHCRC. Assistant Research Technician will divide time as needed providing support for CM imaging services and CM PDX services. The Assistant Research Technician will work closely with both the Imaging Specialist and the Cancer Consortium Xenograft Research (CCXR) Technician to coordinate duties and schedule time. In support of Imaging Services they will assist the researchers in the use of multiple imaging equipment (Primarily MRI but may include Ultrasound, Optical imaging equipment and 2 Photon Laser Microscope as required), provide imaging services and extend support to small animal clinical services when needed. In support of the PDX Program this position will perform a variety of technical procedures related to studies, keep appropriate records and stay within the specifications of IACUC approved protocols. This position will be expected to operate specialized equipment and to perform specialized procedures as required to support animal manipulation segments of research protocols. Completion of these tasks will be expected to be conducted independently without direct supervision.   • Duties to involve extensive rodent handling and procedures to include anesthesia, restraint, sample collection and injections.
  • Become proficient in running MRI and perform MRI imaging studies including animal preparation, anesthesia, physiologic monitoring, placement, completion of imaging protocols, and compilation of data for investigators.
  • Complete maintenance on imaging equipment and software.
  • Become proficient in multiple clinical procedures including (but not limited to) anesthesia and injections.
  • Maintain and prepare laboratory reagents, stocks and media. Clean and autoclave surgical instruments and maintain laboratory equipment (clippers, pipet holders, scope etc.)
  • Provide monitoring for PDX Tumor studies; post-operative observation and daily tumor monitoring including caliper measurements of tumors and animal weights.
  • Provide support for aseptic surgery including performing surgical prep and assisting with anesthesia, implantations, recovery and tumor harvest and data collection
  • Support maintenance of specimen samples, process and store specimen samples and thaw and prepare frozen samples for implantation.
  • Work with multiple databases including SharePoint and Excel for general data entry as well colony maintenance and cage count audits.
  • Follow safe animal and equipment handling guidelines and SOPs.
  • Establish and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with faculty in order to provide high quality customer service.
  • Become cross-trained in order to serve as back-up for other CM services and organizational staff as needed.
  • Complete duties effectively and efficiently with little or no supervision.
  • Work on call, weekend, evening, or holiday shifts as needed or assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS


  • Bachelor’s degree or associate degree in animal science or related field.
  • Minimum one year rodent handling experience
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new systems and techniques.
  • Basic understanding of translational research using in vivo models.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Maintenance of a valid Washington State Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in performing research using mouse models
  • Experience in handling and using imaging modalities including MRI, ultrasound, optical imaging etc.
  • Experience in aseptic surgery in rodents
  • AALAS certification at the LAT level is recommended, and persons hired for this position should continue to pursue this certification as soon as possible once eligible until achieved.
