The Data Science Institute (DSI) and the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) are seeking a Research Scientist to perform research on projects related to simulation optimization and to develop new methods and algorithms that find patterns in temporal and spatial data that can be used to improve health care planning and operations.

Candidates must have a PhD in Operations Research, Data Science, Systems Engineering, Computer Science or related disciplines.

The applicant must have expertise in simulation and modeling, preferably with agent-based simulation and discrete event simulation. The candidate should also have good understanding of both deterministic and stochastic optimization techniques. The candidate must be proficient in programming languages such as python and R and their associated simulation and optimization libraries and packages. The candidate must also have experience in the application of optimization techniques to discrete data.

In addition, the selected candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills to present at professional meetings and to supervise undergraduate and graduate students on multiple projects along with the PI and faculty members in the DSI. The position is for three years with the possibility of renewal, based on satisfactory performance.
